A year after the fatal shooting of Anna Jones, an 18-years-old incoming University of West Georgia student, her mother is suing not just the gunman, but also the owner of multiple Carrollton, GA bars where he drank — spotlighting the establishments' potential role in the tragedy.
The family’s attorney, Jim Myers of the law firm Clay, Taulbee, Myers, spoke with Atlanta News First. “Anna’s family has been struggling. She was the light of the family,” he said.
Jones's grieving mother filed a lawsuit targeting the gunman, Richard Sigman, then a University of West Georgia professor, and the owners of multiple bars in the Carrollton, Georgia area, including Leopoldo’s Pizza in the Adamson Square District.
“Security did nothing to prevent Professor Sigman from leaving and going out into the community drunk, agitated, and armed,” states Myers. “There was no call made to the police. There was no effort to prevent that person from leaving in that state.”
The Jones family wishes to “send a message to the community and to the people who own establishments like this, that firearms and alcohol do not mix and firearms and intoxication do not mix,” Myers said. “And if you’re going to have an establishment in a busy college bar area, you need to have highly trained security who can deal with a situation like this.”
